Queerios Discussion Group

Topic: Queering the Black Church

Location

The Center for Well-Being : 101

Date & Time

December 10, 2024, 6:00 pm7:00 pm

Description

The Black church has historically been a refuge for practicing faith, expressing culture, fostering community, and advocating for social change in the face of oppression. However, it is often thought to be a space where LGBTQ+ identities are universally either condemned or suppressed. We’ll discuss how Black religious queer individuals find ways to practice their spirituality (even as leaders!) in an identity-affirming manner.

Queerios is a discussion-based group open to all that focuses on the experience of being both queer and religious or spiritual.  Each week will focus on a different topic!  We will start with a student facilitator-led activity, and leave plenty of room for discussion, dialogue, and community building.

Queerios welcomes participation of all kinds and disclosure of any identities is never required to join us.  This group is not focused on any particular queer identity or faith-based practice, and will feature topics that highlight a variety of identities and practices present in the UMBC student body.

We welcome allies and community members who want to learn how to better support our students.

Snacks will be provided!
