Land Acknowledgement Hike
Location
On Campus : The Gathering Space
Date & Time
November 8, 2021, 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm
Description
As part of all of our programs, we take a moment at the beginning of each event to acknowledge that the natural land UMBC sits on is connected to the traditional and ancestral homelands of the Piscataway Conoy & Susquehannock Nations.
As part of Indigenous Heritage Month, we will be exploring what does it mean to be on Native lands and how their story continues today. Like our nature guided walk/hike in September, this hike will begin at The Gathering Space for Spiritual Well-Being (Center for Well-Being Room 103).
Some reflections we will engage in are:
- How do we connect to the land as part of your life practice?
- What lessons related to equity and social justice can you integrate in your everyday life in connection to the land we reside on?
- What are ways can you contribute to the conservation of nature both at the lands where UMBC reside on and beyond?
(For non-Indigenous identified participants)
- What are some ways we can be more mindful of Indigenous peoples during Indigenous Heritage Month and year-round?
- What learning and information gathering can you do to share more about the Piscatway-Conoy Peoples with friends, peers and family?
The walk will end with a brief discussion Indigenous Heritage Month, Thanksgiving and more. Snacks will be provided during the discussion portion of the program.
